CLAM CLIPPER

The "Clam Clipper" will not make ferry trips to the clam bed this year or anytime in the future. The clam population has been reduced by increasing numbers of clammers. The actions taken over the last few years seem to have helped stabilize the clam population on the clam beds at this time. We will have to keep evaluating the populations on the clam beds in order to ensure that further more extreme measures will not be necessary to protect the clams.

On the tide calendar we are still listing the tides low enough to dig clams during daylight hours. Boat rentals, clam digging equipment and fishing licenses will continue to be available in the boathouse. Department of Fish and Game wardens will be present during low tides to monitor the catches as well.

  FISHING

Tomales Bay is relatively well protected but as most waterways, should be used with a certain degree of caution. The winds can become quite strong, especially in the afternoon, which can make a return back to the Landing from the south uncomfortable and unsafe.

The entrance to Tomales Bay, although calm much of the time, can become dangerous without warning. Before venturing out the bay you should check with our staff concerning conditions on the bar and in the ocean. The shallow area near Red Rock causes the ocean swell to build and breakers to form at anytime. Please ask questions of the experienced veterans that are Familiar with the local conditions.

Before venturing into the ocean check the conditions, your gear (safety, fuel, radios, etc.) and let someone staying on the beach know your intentions. DO NOT GO out with faulty equipment and always have a two way radio (VHF) aboard. Have an adequate anchor with at least 150' of good line attached to your boat in case of breakdown.
