Pier Replacement necessary

5/8/2019

The pier's pilings are failing and the only way to replace or repair them is to bring the entire pier up to current code standards.  Plastic-wrapped, pressure treated pilings with cross bracing and higher rails are just a few of the requirements.  This means replacing the pier entirely. Replacement requires a new permit and an engineered plan.  Our Coastal and Housing and Community Development permits require us to build a wastewater system and restrooms/showers. To complicate things further, we have been informed by Marin County that they will not be approving any permits for us until we have our Coastal Permit requirements completed. With some luck, the Coastal Commission will a approve the wastewater system permit this year with construction to begin soon thereafter. We can't pay for a wastewater system and a new pier (We're honestly a bit concerned about just the wastewater system).  Unfortunately the pier will have to wait. No, we're not happy about this, either.
There are grants available for public piers and we will be applying for them.  We don't know how long it will take, but it is our hope that having a public agency involved will change the (for the better) how Marin County may feel about issuing a permit.

I understand so much of what you have to do is in order to comply with new regulations. Have you looked into an environmental grant? It may help a little in some area.

Thanks for the update. A pier is easily going to cost a million dollars. It is understandable that it just can't be done right now. It is heartbreaking for everyone especially those of us who go to Lawson's regularly.

Setup a GoFundMe! I will put in on that.

Donor's can then be called "plank-owners" like in the nautical term for the crew of a ship when it is commissioned.

Sad that the pier has been down for as long as it has and will continue to be unavailable with no expected date of reopening. Completely understand the cost factor but it should be one of the top things to be done. It would be GREAT if there was a reduction on boat rentals. We are visiting for 4 days in a few weeks and were sad to hear of the pier being unavailable. We'd like to rent a boat with our kiddos, especially since this is a ladt family trip before our eldest daughter moves off to college.

My wife and I have camping at Lawson's for years, especially during Dungeness crab season. Catching a few crabs off the pier and eating them while camping is one of our favorite s. We would absolutely be willing to donate if a fund is set up. Thank you for the update and good luck.

I have many fond memories as a child on that pier, Lawsons landing was such a wonderful place to go way back in the 70s, they had so much to offer , They used to have a huge party boat there, the Tracer, and you could go out and fish for rock cod and salmon, there were so many small boats able to tie up to moorings, the pier had a fuel dock , they had small aluminium boats and motors to rent , and the shore was lined with boat trailers from all the boat launches, Lawsons Landing made fishing and boating so accessable for everyone back then , it's really sad that so much is not available to young people today because of what this awful coastal commission and Marin county has done to Lawsons Landing , from the clam barge to the fuel dock to the trailer park and now the pier. Everything is gone, We need to all unite , and stand up to this government , Marin county needs to stop targeting this family and their business once and for all !! Let's all donate for a new pier , and let's petition our state to stop the harrassment, They should never be allowed to not issue permits for the improvements that Marin is requiring , that just doesnt make sense, these people in that coastal commission and Marin county.really are trying to close Lawsons landing , that's wrong , they have done everything they have been asked , and complied with their codes and Marin is still harassing this family business, it needs to stop !!! Marin better issue these permits

I totally agree and would be more than happy to help
by working on a committee to publicize the games the Goastal Commission is playing.

Thanks for sharing that there are permits needed to ensure that you will get the construction started regarding the piers. With that in mind, we should look for a contractor we can trust to start the construction of our pier since it is quite run down when we bought this property. We just want it fixed before next year so that we can use it for the New Year to celebrate with relatives.

Yea only enjoyed the pier for about four years before The Coastal Comission came in and ruined everything. We only camping once in the last 5 years. Would love to see the or a pier come back.
